You only get one set of Healthy teeth in your life, so doing everything possible to keep them healthy is important to most people. Chances are you already brush your teeth, but there’s more to keeping those pearly-whites sparkling and healthy than that. Caring for your teeth doesn’t have to be hard, and once you get in the habit of doing things that are good for your teeth, you’ll likely see a difference in the way they look pretty quickly.
Go to the Dentist
This advice may sound obvious, but many people do not go to the dentist as often as they should for regular cleanings and checkups. Maybe it’s the fear of having a cavity or worse that could require the dreaded root canal. However, going to the dentist regularly is exactly what will keep you from having to go through painful dental procedures. Make an appointment with the dentist every six to eight months. If you have a health condition such as diabetes, talk to your doctor about having checkups more often.
Floss the Right Way
You already know Flossing your teeth is an important part of maintaining good oral health.
However, many people, even those that flossing your teeth after every meal, do not really know the best way to floss. When flossing your teeth is used, you want to rest about 18 inches of floss according to the Mayo Clinic. Wrap the yarn around your fingers, and after floss around each tooth, rest another section of floss. If you do not, you’ll be spreading the plaque and bacteria that are removing your other teeth.
Chew Gum with Xylitol
Chewing gum containing sugar varieties are really bad for your teeth, but chewing gum containing
xylitol can really help kill some of the bacteria in the mouth and clean your teeth when you can not rinse with mouthwash or brush your teeth. Try to keep a pack of gum with xylitol you like in all the places you might not be able to brush your teeth as your car or your desk at work. Chewing gum with xylitol is not a substitute for brushing and flossing, but it can help keep your teeth cleaner when you can not brush.
Eat and Drink Properly
What you eat and drink regularly plays an important role in the health of your teeth are. Certain foods such as, soft drinks full of sugar can wreak havoc on your teeth, and you also foods that are high in simple carbohydrates like white bread and refined pasta. You do not have to cut these foods from your diet completely, but you must limit your intake. Including other foods in your diet that are good for the teeth as apples, vegetables rich in fiber and low fat dairy products that are rich in Vitamin C is also a good idea. Try replacing foods that are bad for teeth that promote dental health.
Don’t Overuse Whitening Products
Some whitening products on the market are good for teeth, but many people go overboard when it comes to whitening toothpastes, rinses and gels that can get in the grocery store and drugs. Instead of using whitening products on a consistent basis, to brush more often try and use mouth wash. If you are really concerned about whitening your teeth, try rinsing with a little cider vinegar once a day before brush. This will help remove surface stains from the teeth without damaging them.
